The means to trace our genealogical connections has progressed immensely with the DNA tools available. However, without dialogue, it would be impossible to connect certain facts to lines in our tree. This blog is the start of that dialogue to connect those with hereditary cancer in their family tree to each other. The greater Augusta genealogical tree is connected multiple times over due to the endogamy that is common to many small town heritages. Because of this endogamy, those from the towns of Augusta, Melilli, Brucoli, Catania, Ragusa and others around this area may have a common "founder" for our inherited cancer mutations.
Currently, there are no hereditary cancer registries for the area around Augusta (personal communication with the Dr.ssa Chiara Barone, Cofounder BGenetica). By participating in this information exchange here, I will attempt to trace hereditary cancer connections in this region.
Is there breast, ovarian, pancreatic or prostate cancer in your family? Does your family come from somewhere near the Siracusa region?
1. Hereditary Cancer Communication
Please share any information you can about your family's heredity cancer. Please include the last known ancestors who lived in Sicily, their birth and marriage dates in Sicily along with the town, the type of inherited cancer, and any known mutations (ie: BRCA1).
2. Share your Family Story
For those who want to connect or have a question, I would like to offer you a way to share your family history here If you would like to add a story about your family's journey from Augusta or another Siracusa town. Please send it to me here.
3. Ask a question
If you need some help finding some information for your tree, please reach out and ask! Although I love it when I find a distant relative, I am happy to help you if your family is from Augusta! I cannot promise I have the information, but if I have time, I will help you look.
Don't forget to look at the Resources page for help. You can also join and post your general family history question to our new Facebook Group: Augusta family tree.
